Discover Villahermosa by Hire Car
Villahermosa is the capital of the state of Tabasco just below the Yucatan Peninsula. It is located inland and borders the Gulf of Mexico on one side.
It was founded in the late 16th century and was fairly insignificant until oil deposits were discovered in the 70s and 80s of the last century and the city came into wealth.
Sights in Villahermosa
Villahermosa has many interesting sights to offer. The most famous, however, is 'La Venta'Park, with its large basalt Olmec heads. They are probably warrior heads, but the exact 'function' is not known.
But there are several other interesting basalt figures there, and a small zoo with pelicans, toucans, crocodiles, etc.
Also worth seeing are the various churches and the cathedral 'del Seňor', the rich colonial buildings, many parks and the Natural History Museum, Museum of Antropology, where you can learn more about the Olmec culture, and the Paseo Tabasco. The market halls are also interesting, putting you right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the locals.
Leisure Activities in Villahermosa
Villahermosa’s proximity to the ocean gives you a good opportunity to squeeze in a beach day, too, and swim in the crystal-clear sea on the white, fine-sand beach.
If, on the other hand, you drive inland with your hire car, you can admire the Mayan pyramids in the jungle in Palenque, which are nestled in dense vegetation on a high hill and give a breathtaking view of the vast flat land from the pyramids.
Nearby are the waterfalls 'Aqua Azul' where you can swim.
