Discover Veracruz by Hire Car
Veracruz is a major Mexican city with the largest seaport in the country of Mexico.
It is located on the Gulf of Mexico, is considered the oldest Spanish-founded settlement in Central America, and has well over 500,000 inhabitants.
Sights in Veracruz
The center of Veracruz is dominated by Spanish colonial buildings and Caribbean ease.
The meeting point is Zoalco Square with its surrounding arcades, where you’ll find numerous restaurants, sidewalk cafés and the Palacio Muncipal. Dancing to live music often takes place in the square and surrounding streets in the evenings.
On an offshore island connected to the mainland is the Spanish fortress worth seeing, the Castillo San Juan. Also of interest are the seawater aquarium with many rare tropical fish and the marine museum near the harbour.
Exploring the countryside of Veracruz
Somewhat outside of Veracruz are numerous beautiful, flat-sloping beaches. They can be easily reached by bus or even with a hire car. Recommended are the beaches near Boca del Rio.
Also worth seeing is the ruined city of Zempoala, about 50 km away from Veracruz. It was a center of the Totonak culture, which probably existed between the 4th and 14th centuries.
In addition to the El Encanto waterfall, there are several river courses closer to the urban area, where rafting and canoeing tours are available. Mexico City, the Mexican capital, is about 450 km away, to the west.
