Discover Monterrey by Hire Car
Monterrey, Königsberg in German, is located in northeastern Mexico in the middle of the state of Nuevo León.
Although it had only 80,000 inhabitants at the beginning of the 20th century, today’s metropolis of millions is considered the most livable city in all of Latin America.
The main reason for this was industrialization, which also led to the enormous influx of people.
History and present of Monterrey
Monterrey was first mentioned in 1596 as Ciudad Metropolitan de Nuestra Senora de Monterrey. Later, it even became the capital of Mexico for a short time when the most popular president in Mexican history, Benito Juarez, sought refuge there from Emperor Maximillian and Napoleonic henchmen.
This happened from April 3 to August 5, 1864, when Napoleon used Mexico’s national debt as an excuse to annex the country.
Today, Monterrey is not only synonymous with quality of life, but is also, above all, Latin America’s most important industrial centre. Just as imposing as its history is the location of the city, which is also called La Ciudad de las Montanas, City of the Mountains.
Sights in Monterrey
In the east of the city, divided in half by the Santa Caterina River, the picturesque sight of the 1288-metre Cerro de la Silla dominates while on the northern side of the waterway, the Cerro del Obispado towers in the clouds.
No less impressive is La Gran Plaza in the middle of the city, considered the largest in the continent and twice the size of Red Square in Moscow.
Due to the sprawling nature of Monterrey, a hire car is recommended for your stay.
