Discover Chihuahua by Hire Car
Chihuahua is a city in northern Mexico in the middle of the desert of the same name. It is also the capital of the state of the same name.
Although the city, like many cities in Central and South America, was founded in its current form and location by the Spanish colonizers of the 16th to 19th centuries, its name comes from Nahuatl, a Native American language.
It means something like “dry place.”
Chihuahua history and present
The Spanish founding fathers laid out an oasis and settlers soon followed. In the 1910s, Chihuahua gained notoriety because legendary revolutionary Pancho Villa used it as his headquarters and was even governor of Chihuahua province for a time.
He was, and still is, revered by many Mexicans as the “Mexican Robin Hood” or a folk hero. He is present in street names and the like to this day.
Today the city has a population of about 700,000 and has a good infrastructure by Mexican standards.
Sights in Chihuahua
In Chihuahua, the main attraction is the main square with its cathedral from the Spanish colonial period, as well as the downtown with some buildings from the founding period and its quiet and inviting cafes and restaurants. In the state of Chihuahua is the wildly beautiful Barranca del cobre (engl.: Copper Gorge), which got its name because of the rock formations that shine copper-red in the sunlight.
It is easily accessible from Chihuahua with a hire car rented on site and takes the breath away of astonished tourists with its gorges, some of which are up to 1,800 metres deep.
In recent years, extreme hikers and whitewater rafters have also discovered this area as an ideal vacation spot.
