Discover Sliema by Hire Car
Sliema is an impressive medium-sized town on the north-east coast of the Mediterranean island of Malta, with a population of around 20,000 in an area of about one and a half square kilometres.
The former fishing town has blossomed into a respectable holiday resort in recent years.
Today Sliema is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Malta, but at the same time it has retained its original charm. You can still find there what Sliema literally means: peace.
Sights in Sliema
Everywhere in Malta you can find traces of the famous Knights of Malta, who not only gave their name to the island, but also almost turned it into a fortress. Sliema is no exception.
Here, in addition to several medieval fortified towers, you will also find the legendary Fort St. Elmo, built in 1552 by the Spanish master builder Pedro Pardo.
At the time, its main purpose was to protect the harbour. Since it is located right on the tip of a peninsula, it offers fantastic views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Leisure activities in Sliema
Sliema was still a favoured location for the summer residences of the inhabitants of nearby Valetta at the beginning of the 20th century. Even today, the palatial villas, some of them palatial, lining the roadsides of the inland paths make an imposing sight.
But the lively, three-kilometre-long beach promenade of Sliema also invites you to stroll. Especially in the evening hours, this is a popular meeting place for the Maltese.
The coastline around Sliema is lined with small, romantic bays, although most of them can only be reached by hire car.
Because the town was influenced by the British in its history, English is spoken here, unlike other areas in Malta.
