Discover Gozo by Hire Car

Gozo is part of the Mediterranean Republic of Malta and is the second largest island in the archipelago.

Approximately 31,000 people currently live in the 14 towns spread over 67 square kilometres, with about a quarter of them in the island’s capital, Victoria, alone.

There are ferry services every 45 minutes between Gozo and Malta, six kilometres away, with the port town of Mgarr as the destination on Gozo.

In recent years, tourism in Gozo has been gaining in importance.

Sights in Gozo

The island of Gozo has been inhabited since the fifth millennium BC. One of the most imposing testimonies to this period is the Neolithic temple complex of Ggantija, south of the present-day village of Xaghira, which sits atop Gozo’s highest elevation.

In 1980, the complex, which is about 5800 years old and was used until 2500 BC, was inscribed on the World Heritage List. The name of the temple refers to its size, as it was derived from “gigantic” and is one of the oldest places of worship made of stone in this world. It is rumored that a giantess created it in one night while holding her child in her arms.

Exploring the island of Gozo

Gozo is ideal to explore by hire car, with the west being of particular interest with its many attractions and scenic beauty.

In addition to the bizarre rock formations on the west coast, such as the “Azur Window” and the “Fungus Rock”, there is the Kercem aqueduct and a washed-out tunnel connecting the sea to an inland lake to visit in Dwejra, as the area is known.

East of Marsalforn, which lies on the north coast of Gozo, you come across Calypso Cave, a grotto where Odysseus is said to have lived for seven years with the nymph Calypso.
