Discover Luxembourg City by Hire Car
Luxembourg City is the capital and, with a population of around 86,000, the largest city in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the only independent Grand Duchy in the world. Since the founding of the European Coal and Steel Community in 1952, numerous European authorities have been located here, so that Luxembourg City is considered the third seat of government of the European Union alongside Brussels and Strasbourg. In addition to its political importance, Luxembourg gained prominence as a financial centre – two factors that give the city an astonishing cosmopolitan flair for its modest size.
Despite political and economic development, Luxembourg has largely retained its original character. The old town, the casemates and the remains of the fortifications that once encircled Luxembourg were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 and can be admired on an extended walk. Particular attention should be paid to the Grand Ducal Palace with its Renaissance façade and the 17th century Notre Dame Cathedral. In addition to the fortress wall, the cityscape is characterised by the Petruß Valley with its extensive green spaces, which are reserved exclusively for walkers and separate the upper town from the busy railway station district. A visit to the picturesque Grund district on the banks of the Alzette and the European and business district in the Kirchberg district also offer contrasting insights into the city’s everyday life.
As the centre of the greater Saar-Lor-Lux region, Luxembourg City is also the ideal starting point for exploring the border triangle by hire car.
