Discover Kaunas by Hire Car
At the time of the first independence of the Lithuanian state, when Vilnius was under Polish administration, Kaunas was the capital.
The city is located at the mouth of the Neris River into the Memel River (Nemunas in Lithuanian). An inland lake, called the Kaunsasser Meer (Kaunas Sea), was created by a damming operation and offers a variety of water sports.

In the IX Fort, an exhibition commemorates the murder of the Jewish population of Lithuania during the Second World War. The history of the Jews of Kaunas occupies a large space in this exhibition; in addition, the extermination of Jewish life throughout Lithuania is reported.
A little outside the city of Kaunas are castle ruins worth seeing.
