Discover Reggio Calabria by Hire Car
Reggio Calabria, with a population of about 180,000 in an area of 236 square kilometres, is a large city in the province of the same name in the south of the Italian boot, directly opposite Sicily.
Until the 1970s, Reggio Calabria was the capital of Calabria, but today it has to settle for the title of the region’s “largest city”.
Sights in Reggio Calabria
The earliest traces of settlement in Reggio Calabria date back to the eighth century BC, when it was founded by Greek settlers. After several changes of rulers throughout its history, the city was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1908 followed by a tsunami, but has been lovingly rebuilt over the last 100 years.
Of the structures in Reggio Calabria that were spared by the earthquake, the 15th-century fort and the remains of the ancient city walls dating back to the fourth century BC, as well as ancient Roman baths with magnificent mosaics, are the most imposing relics. No less fascinating is the neo-Romanesque-Byzantine cathedral in Reggio Calabria, built after 1908. The Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia houses the famous bronze statues dating back to the fifth century BC, found on the floor of the Ionian Sea in the 1970s.
