Discover Volos by Hire Car
Volos, with a population of 85,000 in an area of just under 30 square kilometres, is a medium-sized town in the Thessaly region of the Pagasitic Gulf in eastern Greece.
As early as the 19th century, when Volos was founded on the edge of the Pelion Mountains, the port was the focal point of the town, which was an important trading centre and helped the town to prosper.
Today ferries sail from here to the Sporades archipelago, but ships bound for Syria or the Middle East also anchor here.
Blessons in Volos
In ancient times, there were three cities in the region of Volos, Iolkos, Demetrias and Pagasae, whose excavations can currently be admired on the way from the town to Alikies beach, which offers ideal bathing and water sports facilities.
Other than that, Volos presents itself as a modern city with a progressive townscape, especially since 1955 when an earthquake destroyed the old city centre.
A popular meeting place for locals and tourists is the lively waterfront promenade with numerous small shops, bars and restaurants. A beautiful view of the town, which nestles picturesquely in the sheltered bay of the gulf, can be had from the suburb of “Ano Volos”, which is elevated on the slopes of Mount Pelion.
