Discover Thassos by Hire Car
Thassos is a beautiful island in the Aegean Sea in northeastern Greece, with a population of just under 14,000 in an area of just over 380 square kilometres.
The eponymous main town of the island is also called “Limena”.
Thassos, which has been inhabited since ancient times and is now the country’s second largest island, was at that time still connected to the mainland, from which it is now separated by about eight kilometres.
Leisure on Thassos
Three mountain ranges dominate the landscape of Thassos, all of which are above 1000 meters. These also strongly determine the vegetation of the island, which, in addition to heather and olive trees, consists of strawberry trees, laurel and evergreen wild roses, with the olive trees also forming an economic factor.
For a long time, Thassos was merely an insider’s tip for domestic tourists, but in recent years German holidaymakers have also been increasingly coming to the island with its numerous, gorgeous sandy beaches.
The most beautiful coastal sections are Golden Beach in the northeast of Thassos, Psili Ammos in the south and Tripiti in the southwest of the island.
The gently sloping, sandy shores and crystal clear waters are especially popular with families with children. A perfect infrastructure optimally rounds off an ideal holiday experience here.
Exploring the surroundings of Thassos
For those who prefer smaller and more secluded bays, it’s best to take a hire car and explore the coast on your own.
There are paths leading everywhere from the well-maintained ring road, which almost completely encircles Thassos, to the sea, where fantastic swimming opportunities await.
You also have the opportunity to get to know the beautiful landscape of the mountainous hinterland, where the original way of life of the islanders can still be found today. It also offers hiking enthusiasts an excellent trekking area of bizarre beauty.
