Discover Mykonos by Hire Car
Mykonos is an 86 square kilometre Greek island between Tinos to the north and Naxos to the south.
Currently, around 9300 people live on the Cycladic island in the Aegean Sea.
According to legend, Mykonos came into being when Hercules threw a giant into the sea during one of his 12 trials. When he turned to stone, the island was born.
Leisure activities in Mykonos
The hero named the island after Mykons, the grandson of the god Apollo. Today, Mykonos is one of the tourist strongholds in the Greek Aegean. By the way, one of the first fans of the island was the former American first lady Jackie Kennedy.
In addition to miles of gorgeous beaches and almost secluded bays that offer ideal conditions for all kinds of water sports, there is much more to see on Mykonos.
Sights in Mykonos
First and foremost here is the archaeological museum of the island, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the port of Mykonos Town. Here, only exhibits from the 25th to the first century BC are displayed, which come from the former necropolis of Delos. Delos was a central point of religious life in ancient times.
On a hill in Mykonos Town is Kato Mili, the island’s landmark. Even from afar, the whitewashed windmills that are so typical of the region shine. Today, four of the original ten mills still process grain, and there is also an agricultural museum with a stone wine press.
Except for the Little Venice neighborhood, built in the Venetian style on the seafront, the entire townscape conforms to the local architecture, with steep streets, white houses and lots of floral decorations.
Mykonos is ideal to explore by hire car.
