Discover Hersonissos in Crete by Hire Car
Hersonissos is a small port town about 26 kilometres east of Heraklion on the north coast of the island of Crete in the Aegean Sea, Greece.
Due to its idyllic location in a bay sheltered by mountains and the numerous hotels on site, Hersonissos is one of the most important tourist spots on the whole island.
Once upon a time, the small town was a Roman port, a substantial part of which is said to have sunk in an earthquake. Currently, Greek underwater archaeologists are testing this theory.
Leisure activities in Hersonissos
Although most of the shops of Hersonissos can be found around the main street that crosses the town from east to west, the nicer alleys lead down to the sea. Here you can still find numerous buildings typical of Crete.
Hersonissos, apart from its attractive beaches, which offer ideal conditions for all kinds of water sports, is best known for its active nightlife, which attracts especially younger holidaymakers to this place on the Greek island.
For additional variety, there is also the water park “Star Beach” with its several water slides and other attractions in the immediate vicinity of Hersonissos. Here, too, it is recommended to drive a hire car, as the public transport leaves much to be desired.
Even in Greece, the town of Hersonissos has many name variations and you can also find it referred to as Hersinissos, Herssonissos or Hersonisos.
Exploring the countryside of Hersonissos
However, if you’re interested in the quaintness of Crete, you shouldn’t miss the chance to take a trip by hire car to the adjacent mountains, which lie just beyond the town of Hersonissos.
Besides the bizarre beauty of the barren mountain landscape, the village of Koutouloufari with its original houses and cosy tavernas is particularly recommended here.
