Discover Karpathos by Hire Car
Carpathos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea between Rhodes and Crete.
With 5400 inhabitants on 330 square kilometers it is rather sparsely populated and so far spared from mass tourism. The island, which stretches from north to south, is very mountainous and at 1215 metres, the Limni represents the highest elevation of Karpathos.
Seeing and experiencing Karpathos
3000 residents live in Karpathos Town alone, the largest town on the island, which was founded as early as 1000 years BC. It used to be called the city of Poseidon, while today it is also known as Pigadia.
In the Middle Ages, Karpathos town was abandoned due to numerous raids by pirates and its inhabitants fled to the mountains at that time and founded the town of Olymbos, which today is also known far beyond the borders of the island.
The relatively large village is picturesquely situated on a mountainside and is almost hidden from view from the coast. The special thing about this settlement, which was only connected to the public electricity grid in 1980, is the preservation of the original traditions and customs that are still practiced here today.
The enchanting Dort on Karpathos seems more like an open-air museum and the villagers have made a virtue of necessity by presenting old crafts and traditional costumes to tourists.
Also, one of the last windmills typical of the region is still in operation here and visitors can get traditional food, such as the dark bread from the stone oven. Recently Olymbos, can be reached by hire car via a new asphalt road.
Leisure on Karpathos
Karpathos has its own airport and is particularly popular with surfers for its wind statistics.
