Discover York by Hire Car
York is a magnificent city in the north of England, with most of its medieval core preserved.
The old town with its narrow streets, the so-called “gates”, is absolutely worth seeing. Here the visitor can still feel the medieval atmosphere.
In the most famous alley, the “Shambles”, there used to be butcher’s shops. To prevent the meat from being spoiled by the sun, the houses opposite were built especially close to each other here.
Sights in York
Probably the most famous structure is York Minster, which can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. Visitors can get a particularly nice view of the city and the minster by walking along the city wall, which is over five kilometres long.
At the “Jorvik Viking Centre”, visitors can immerse themselves in the York of the Vikings on a wagon ride. Sounds and smells try to make the illusion perfect. The main focus is on York in the Victorian era at the York Castle Museum, where an entire street has been recreated from that period.
For railway enthusiasts, the National Railway Museum is a must-see.
Exploring the York countryside
Although still quite unknown, the environs of York are also worth seeing.
The Yorkshire Dales, now designated a national park, are easy to reach by hire car. The hilly country here always offers new views.
