Regensburg is an excellent starting point for excursions into the Altmühltal, along the rivers Naab and Laber and into the Upper Palatinate as well as the Bavarian Forest.
With a hire car, you can reach the Liberation Hall, built to commemorate the battles against the Napoleonic army, Brunn Castle and Rosenburg Castle with its falconry in a short time. By boat you can easily visit the Valhalla in the Altmühltal and the Danube breakthrough.
For larger excursions by hire car, a tour along the Glass Route through the Bavarian Forest is a good idea. In the glassblowing workshops you can watch the masters of this art at work. The scenic countryside surrounding Regensburg is very popular with hikers and cyclists.
