Discover Lindau by Hire Car
Lindau was first mentioned in a document in 882 as a fishing settlement and is now the largest town on the shores of Lake Constance in Bavaria, with a population of 24,500.
The actual old town and harbour are located on a picturesque island in Lake Constance, which is connected to the mainland by a pier and causeway.
Sights in Lindau
One of the most popular tourist destinations on Lake Constance is the port of Lindau. Strolling along the palm-lined lakeside promenade, one feels a touch of Mediterranean flair. A relic of the old city fortifications of the 13th century is the Mangturm.
Probably the most popular photo motif on the “Bavarian Sea” is the Lindau harbour entrance, flanked by the Bavarian Lion and the New Lighthouse. The streets of the old town are characterized by Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture.
Leafy walkways, fountains and quaint pubs define the image of Maximilianstraße, Lindau’s most popular shopping street. It’s worth taking a detour to Zitronengässle, where time seems to have stood still.
The Old Town Hall on Reichsplatz is a magnificent Gothic building, which was decorated in the 19th century with remarkable facade paintings showing motifs from Lindau’s city history.
An attraction is also the red marble Lindavia Fountain, which memorializes Lindavia, the city’s protector.
On the market square stands what is probably Lindau’s most outstanding house, the House of Calvazzen, which now houses the Lindau Town Museum. Visitors can marvel here at an impressive collection of furniture, paintings and toys from the 15th to 19th centuries
