The Hohenstaufen City of Goeppingen
The city of Göppingen is located in the state of Baden-Württemberg and is considered the gateway to the Swabian Alb.
Due to its proximity to the Swabian Alb, nature lovers, hikers and walkers in particular will find plenty of space to pursue their beloved leisure activity.
Sights in Göppingen
Göppingen itself is first mentioned in a document in 1154 and also offers numerous buildings to visit due to its great age.
On the hunt for sights, a hire car is a pleasant companion through the city. Furthermore, it allows for excursions such as to the ruins of Hohenstaufen Castle.
The ruin is one of the last witnesses of the late 11th century and still watches over the town and its inhabitants. In the heart of Goeppingen lies the sleepy little town church. The sacred building is rarely used for services anymore, but the church’s artwork and furnishings attract plenty of visitors.
Worth seeing here is especially the 18th-century crucifix and an exhibit called the “floating horizon” by a local artist. The Oberhofen Church, with its two towers rising into the air, is the town’s landmark.
The church, dating from 1436, is an architectural masterpiece and a true contemporary witness from these past centuries. The castle in Göppingen now houses the local court and for this reason is unfortunately no longer open to visitors.
Leisure activities in Göppingen
It is worth visiting the imposing building and the adjacent castle park with its fountains, sculptures and pleasure houses. A fun afternoon is spent by families with or without children at the Göppingen Zoo. The small zoo promises a successful change from the stressful everyday life with its species-rich animal world.
On invigorating walks through the unspoilt nature of the Alb, it is excellent to relax and recover.
