Lutherstadt Eisenach
Located in the valley of the Hörsel River in the German state of Thuringia is the impressive city of Eisenach.
The Wartburg near Eisenach was once the residence of the Thuringian landgraves and gained cultural and historical importance mainly due to the stay of Martin Luther.
Sights in Eisenach
But it is not only Luther who is associated with the castle and the town, but also notable personalities such as the minnesinger Walther von der Vogelweide and Johann Sebastian Bach, who was born in Eisenach.
The centerpiece of the old town is the market with the worth seeing town hall and the baroque town house and the associated Thuringian Museum. A highlight of the town, in addition to the beautiful parish church of St. George, is the Luther House, which houses a memorial to the young Luther.
On a sightseeing tour of Eisenach, the Bach House should also not be missed. This was dedicated to the composer Johann Sebastian Bach and his family and some of the historic instruments are still played today for unique listening pleasures.
Of course, an absolute must-see in Eisenach is Wartburg Castle, one of Germany’s most interesting castles on Wartberg Mountain. It was in this magnificent building that Martin Luther translated the New Testament from the original text, thereby making a decisive contribution to the formation of the New High German language.
Worthwhile here is especially the south tower, from which you have a fantastic view of Eisenach and the Thuringian Forest.
Recreational opportunities in Eisenach
Whoever is in Eisenach in mid-August should not miss the largest medieval spectacle “Luther – The Festival” at the Old Cemetery.
The focus of this festival is a pageant of medieval costumed people and a big Luther play.
Highly recommended is also a trip by hire car to Bad Liebenstein – Thuringia’s oldest spa or to the white limestone cliffs of the Hörsel Mountains, located east of Eisenach.
