Discover Cologne by Hire Car
Cologne is a North Rhine-Westphalian city on the Rhine, and with a population of almost one million, it is one of the most interesting cities in Germany.
The most prominent point and landmark of the metropolis is the all-surpassing cathedral, which was completed in 1880 after 632 years of construction.
It is one of Germany’s most popular buildings and attracts millions of visitors to Cologne every year. The official name of the masterpiece of Gothic architecture, which is also a World Heritage Site, is Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria.
Sights in Cologne
In addition to visiting the breathtaking interior of the cathedral church with quite a few tombs, it is also worth climbing to the top of the tower, from where you have a fantastic view of Cologne and the surrounding area. Right next to the church is the Domplatte with the adjacent Roman-Germanic Museum.
The square is one of the liveliest, most visited places in Europe. In summer you can find numerous street artists here and both the old town of Cologne and the Hohe Straße with its many shopping opportunities, as well as the train station, can be reached within minutes.
The cultural diversity of Cologne, however, also extends throughout the city and many locations, such as the Tanzbrunnen, the E-Werk or the Arena can be better reached with a hire car. Here you will find something for every taste, from musicals to exhibitions to rock concerts.
Carnival in Cologne
Once a year, however, Cologne is in a complete state of emergency and anyone suffering from claustrophobia had better avoid it then.
Because when the carnival, the fifth season, is rung in here, there is a dense crowd between Alter Markt, the old town and the Rhine promenade.
Several millions of fools “bützen” everything and everyone at this time. It is the largest and most boisterous street carnival in the republic.
