Sights in Coburg
The historic town centre is home to picturesque half-timbered houses, medieval alleyways and the castle square, which is well worth a visit.
In the heart of the old town lies the pretty market square with the impressive Prince Albert Monument. The north side is occupied by the former government building – the town hall. Opposite is the town hall with a beautiful Renaissance hall and the Coburg oriel.
Also located on the market square is the Doll Museum, where more than 900 dolls and dollhouses await their admirers. An absolute highlight in Coburg is the Schlossplatz with its ensemble of arcades, Palais Edinburgh, court or state theatre, court garden and Ehrenburg Castle.
This castle houses the Coburg State Library in addition to gorgeous halls and chambers from the 17th-19th centuries. The beautiful court garden leads up to the Veste Coburg.
The “Frankish Crown”, as the Veste Coburg is also known, is one of the largest medieval castles in Germany, covering an area of around 25,000 square metres. From the battlements of the castle, there is a great view over the Coburg region, the Main valley and the Thuringian Forest.
For those who want to indulge in culinary delights, Coburger Schmätzchen and the famous Coburger Bratwurst are not to be missed. The latter is, in fact, Coburg’s national dish par excellence, as it is grilled not over charcoal but over well-dried pine cones.
