Berchtesgaden is beautifully and impressively surrounded by high mountains in a valley basin in the most southeastern corner of Bavaria.
The fantastic location and the many opportunities for hiking and winter sports, make it one of the most popular destinations in Bavaria.
Sights in Berchtesgaden
The Berchtesgaden market square with its historic houses such as the Hirschenhaus, is the focal point of the civic centre of the former prince’s provostship. It’s also home to the collegiate church, with 14th- and 15th-century choir stalls and a notable cloister.
An interesting and cultural afternoon is promised by the local history museum in Adelsheim Castle or the salt mine with attached salt museum.
A day trip to the spa and adventure pool Watzmann-Therme near the salt mine should not be missed, especially families with children. In addition to fun and games, you will also find plenty of relaxation here.
The Kehlsteinhaus should not be missed on any tour of Berchtesgaden. Because this opens its visitors an overwhelming view over the worth seeing Berchtesgadener Land. A detour by hire car to the nearby spa town of Ramsau is also highly recommended, with the Reiter Alpe towering above to the west and the Hochkalter to the south. At the foot of the Reiter Alpe lies the beautiful Hintersee, which you can hike around in about an hour.
Leisure activities in Berchtesgaden
The Berchtesgadener Land comprises the area of the Berchtesgaden Alps between the Saalach in the west, the Salzach in the east, the Untersberg in the north and the Steinernes Meer in the south. The gorgeous area south of the city is occupied by the Berchtesgaden National Park, which is definitely not to be missed.
The absolute highlight here is the impressive Königssee below the imposing 2,713-metre-high Watzmann. On extensive hikes and walks you can find peace and relaxation from the stressful everyday life.
