Discover Bamberg by Hire Car
While writing his wandering song “Wohl auf die Luft geht frisch und rein” (Well on the air goes fresh and pure), the romance poet Viktor von Scheffel wished for Bamberg.
The lightness of birds also overcomes today’s visitor when he enters the university town of 70,000 inhabitants.
Sights in Bamberg
The unique architectural ensemble of Bamberg, which this year celebrated the 1000th anniversary of the founding of its bishopric, already ensures this – an ensemble in which these 1000 years are also reflected in the architecture.
Towered by the sacred buildings of the ecclesiastical mountain town such as the imperial cathedral with its famous statue of the Bamberg Rider, the Old Court and the New Residence, a small but fine old town spreads out along the two arms of the Regnitz, which is unparalleled and has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.
If you stand there at the famous bridge town hall and look downstream, you will think you have been transported to the lightness of southern climes. Half-timbered houses with little gardens and jetties on the riverbank – it’s not for nothing that this district of Bamberg, sometimes referred to as “Franconian Rome”, bears the nickname “Little Venice”.
Leisure activities in Bamberg
But the narrow streets of the old town are also a great place to forget the daily grind. In addition to modern shops, there are still a number of quaint shops with traditional industries to be found.
But what would Bamberg be without its epicurean specialities, offered in a number of cosy inns such as the world-famous “Schlenkerla”, or its breweries?
These original inns and breweries can also be found in the Bamberg area and are actually part of the standard program when visiting the old bishop’s city. For such an excursion, it is advisable to hire car in the city.
