Discover Strasbourg by hire car
With 270,000 inhabitants in an area of 80 square kilometres, Strasbourg is a fascinating large city in Alsace, which lies in the north-east of France.
The city looks back on a millennium of history and today Strasbourg is the seat of various European institutions, such as the European Parliament or the European Court of Human Rights, which leads to it often being called the capital of Europe.
Sights in Strasbourg
Strasbourg is picturesquely surrounded by the arms of the Ill River, which divides in the city area. The historic old town is located in an extremely picturesque island location, the Grande Ile, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. The city’s landmark, Strasbourg Cathedral, can also be found here. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, this sacred building, which harmoniously combines Gothic and Romanesque styles, is one of the most important cathedrals in Europe. The cathedral’s forecourt forms an extremely picturesque setting with its unique, multi-storey half-timbered houses, which are crowned by the Kammerzellhaus on the north side. This late Gothic building is one of the finest of its kind and is Strasbourg’s best-known profane building.
Another highlight of Strasbourg is the Tanners’ Quarter, which is criss-crossed by several canals. Here again one encounters the typical half-timbering with its high pointed roofs and flared dormers. The narrow alleys perfectly round off the picture of a medieval quarter. The Palais du Rhin, the former imperial palace, is also well worth a visit. An imposing example of 19th century German architecture.
Leisure activities in Strasbourg
All of Strasbourg resembles a city straight out of a picture book, with little sensations around every corner. Because of its vastness, it’s best to start an excursion with a hire car.
