Sights in Poitiers
The area around Poitiers was settled in ancient times, as evidenced by the dolmens on the Roman road to Bourges and some remains of what was once a huge Roman arena from the first century. The baptistery of St. Jean, which still partly dates back to the fourth century, is also extremely impressive. It is one of the oldest sacred buildings in France. An extremely worth seeing example of gothic architecture can be found in Poitiers in the cathedral St. Pierrre, which was built between 1200 and 1300 as a hall construction. A wonderful example of late Romanesque architecture is the church Notre-Dame la Grande from the same period. But there are numerous other outstanding buildings from the early and late Middle Ages.
Another attraction of Poitiers is its old town alone. Here, beautiful half-timbered houses are strung together like pearls on a string. Especially around the Place du march? Notre-Dame, the rue de la Chaine and the rue de la Regratterie, extremely picturesque buildings can be seen.
