Sights in Nimes
In essence, the culture of the Roman Empire shaped the image of the city, of which still today numerous, excellently preserved, buildings testify. Even then, more than 25,000 people lived in the city and cultural institutions, such as the amphitheater, which can still be found in the center of Nimes, or the Temple of Diana, were already impressive architectural works of art in ancient times. The ‘Pont du Gard’, remains of a former 50-kilometre-long Roman aqueduct that transported water from the springs near Uz?s to the city, is one of the most important of its kind in the world.
Also well worth a visit is the Maison Carr?e, with porticoes typical of the first century, which was used as a forum in ancient times. Directly opposite, in modern form, is the Carr?e d?Art, which houses the Nimes Art Museum and is the work of the English architect Sir Norman Foster. In the Jardins de la Fontaine, a park complex built in the 18th century, you will not only find a wonderfully quiet, green oasis in the middle of Nimes, but also the Diana Temple and the only surviving Celtic building, the Tour Magne, which have been integrated into the park. From the 32-metre high Celtic tower you have a fantastic view of Nimes and its surroundings.
The city is ideal to explore with a hire car.
