Discover Calais by Hire Car
If you’ve ever travelled to England, Calais is definitely a familiar name as a port city in France.
There are a number of ferries from Calais to Dover and other English port cities, and the Eurotunnel to England is also not far from Calais.
Sights in Calais
Unfortunately, the historic old town, which was destroyed during the Second World War, has not been rebuilt as it was before. But despite this, there is much to see in Calais such as the Renaissance town hall and the monument Les Bourgeois de Calais (“The Burghers of Calais”) on the town hall forecourt. The old lighthouse is also an eye-catcher, ensuring a wonderful view of the harbour.
Calais also has a couple of very nice museums such as Musée des Beaux-Arts et de la Dentelle with its exhibition on the city’s history and war museum Musée de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale with exhibits from World War II.
Discovering the Caen area
Whoever takes a hire car in Calais can not only explore the city itself, but also the surrounding area. The Cote d'Opal is a popular tourist magnet in the north of France and can boast many beautiful places. So you can visit the towns of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, Berck-sur-Mer and also Boulogne-sur-Mer or simply sunbathe and walk along the coast of the English Channel.
