Discover Tampere by Hire Car
The Finnish town of Tampere (Tammerfors) is a discovery for any visitor!
Located about an hour’s drive north of the capital Helsinki on an isthmus between several lakes, Tampere offers everything a traveller could want in Finland: Urban flair, a vibrant cultural scene, an open-minded university environment and nature everywhere you look.
Tampere’s hotels and restaurants need not fear comparison with those in the capital either.
Sights in Tampere
To get to know the various sights, it is a good idea to explore the city and its surroundings with a hire car – the paths in the city, which is densely built only in the center around theaters and the landmark that can be seen from afar, the TV tower that also serves as a weather station, are quite long even for experienced walkers…
And what can you not find here: The Museum of Modern Art offers changing exhibitions around the year.
There are cafés, concert halls, conference venues and an ever-changing cultural life in the former industrial buildings in the city centre.
Somewhat more whimsical is the Lenin Museum – the only one of its kind outside Russia.
In addition to the unique industrial buildings of the city centre, architecture-loving visitors are sure to find their way to the town’s world-famous library building, as well as the many buildings of the classical modernist movement, which lasted in Finland until the 1950s and was uniquely able to combine clarity, functionality and closeness to nature.
Leisure in Tampere
In the evening, visitors get to know the not-so-reticent Finns better: at a tango, at spontaneous ska concerts in a bar or dancing in one of the numerous dance cafés on small islands off the coast of the city, which can often only be reached by rowing boat. (English is spoken alongside Finnish and Swedish. Many Tampere residents also understand some German.)
