Around Lake Saimaa by hire car
Most of Finland’s lakes stretch across the southern half of the country. So does the largest, Lake Saimaa.
On the southern shore of this vast body of water, the town of Lappeenranta, set in charming natural surroundings, welcomes its visitors.
Sports activities in Lappeenranta
Vacation is possible all year round because every season awaits those seeking relaxation with special charms. That the Finnish hosts leave no stone unturned to make the holidaymakers’ stay as pleasant as possible is a matter of course. They are known for this far beyond the borders of the country. Sporting activities are high on the organisers’ popularity scale.
As early as February, the Maakaasuhiito cross-country ski race attracts countless winter sports enthusiasts. From Lappeenranta it goes to Imatra in the northwest and just one month later the Saimaa cross-country skiing starts, a large-scale mass event in Finland.
Discovering the Lappeenranta hinterland
In the warmer seasons, of course, the lake and the unspoiled nature attract. Via hidden hiking trails but also via a well-developed road network, a large area of this charming region can be explored. With your own car or, of course, with a hire car, it is also worthwhile to circumnavigate Lake Saimaa, proper.
To Savonlinna, it is a stone’s throw and who plans his holidays in the months of June and July, can attend the world-famous opera festival there, on the theatrically developed Olovsburg (Olavinlinna).
Along the Salpausselkä mountain range, which stretches around the entire southern half of the Lake District, we then head back to Lappeenranta, the starting point of the trip. Now it’s time to gather strength to plan new tours, because there is still a lot to see and experience in and around Lappeenranta.
