Discover Kittilä by Hire Car
Lapland is not, as is commonly believed, flat as a towel. The shallow ridges of hills, the tunturi, provide scenic variety in the vast, open countryside.
Visitors won’t get bored amid the harsh landscape, in Finland’s north.
The seasons themselves score points for their extremes. As cold as it is in winter, as warm and sunny, the short summer shows itself. Spring and autumn play with colours and it seems that one is constantly busy trying to outdo the other.
Exploring the Kittilä countryside
In the midst of this rugged nature, only about an hour’s drive north of Napapiiri, the Arctic Circle, lies the sprawling municipality of Kittilä. As the roads between the towns are well developed, and the impression intensifies the further north you go, seeming to get bigger and bigger, a hire car is more than advisable.
In Kittilä there is the possibility to rent such an expedient travel companion without any problems. Then the scenery around the small town, which is well worth seeing, can be explored effortlessly.
Leisure activities in Kittilä
The small mountain ranges are omnipresent here as well. The Pallastunturi, for example, offers skiing and hiking opportunities in equal measure. A real winter sports stronghold, is the area at the Levitunturi. There is also the birthplace of the Finnish landscape painter Reidar Särestöniemi (1925 – 1981), who became world-famous with the realistic representation of his pictures. Worth seeing is the art gallery named after him.
North of Kittilä are the huge national parks of Finland and to the west, it is not far to neighboring Sweden. A hire car makes you independent and it is only a stone’s throw to Rovaniemi in the south, the capital of the administrative district of Lapland. Loneliness will not spread during a holiday in Kittilä. On the contrary. The holidays will not be enough if value is placed on expedient companions, ? on a hire car, for example.
