Exploring Nicosia by Hire Car
Nicosia is the capital of the Republic of Cyprus and is located in the interior of the island.
It is the last divided capital in the world.
In 1974, the Republic of Cyprus was split by a war in which the northern half broke away from the Greek-ruled southern half and became the internationally unrecognized “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”.
The border runs through the middle of the Cypriot capital and is known as the “Green Line”. It consists of barricades and barbed wire and is guarded by soldiers from UN troops. The airport, which is also in the UN protected zone, has been closed.
South part of Nicosia
The old town, both in the Greek and Turkish parts, is in need of renovation and is often in poor condition, although work has already begun on the renovation of individual historic buildings.
The southern, Greek-administered part of the old town has a rich cultural life, with restaurants, pubs, small craft workshops and traditional shops spread mainly around the Famagusta Gate area.
On the pedestrian street that stretches from Platia Eleftherias to the “Green Line” are modern, more exclusive shops.
Seeable buildings in the southern part include the Faneromeni Church and St John’s Cathedral dating from 1662, the Icon Museum and the Archaeological Museum.
North part of Nicosia
In the Turkish northern part, you should visit the Arabahmet and Selimiye mosques, various museums and the caravanserai. Around the old town of Nicosia stretches a Venetian fortress wall about five kilometers long with eleven bastions.
