Discover Zagreb by Hire Car
Zagreb is both the largest and the capital of Croatia, with a population of just under 800,000 in an area of nearly 650 square kilometres.
Located in the heart of the country, which is picturesquely divided by the Sava River, which also significantly shapes the cityscape, Zagreb lies at the foot of a small mountain range called Medvednica.
The greater Zagreb region is currently home to almost one and a half million people.
History of Zagreb
Founded as early as 1094, Zagreb was first mentioned as a capital in 1557. Today, the city is divided into an upper and lower city, which are connected by an interesting rack railway.
The government quarter in Zagreb is also worth seeing, and here especially the former seat of the president, the “Palais des Banus”. In 1991, the baroque palace was bombed by the then still Yugoslav army when the president was staying there.
In response, Croatia declared its independence.
Sights in Zagreb
In close proximity to the cog railway is the Lotrscak, a 13th-century tower where a shot is fired from a cannon every day at 12.
The Church of St Mark in Zagreb, which is very reminiscent of Vienna’s St Stephen’s Cathedral in its construction, also dates from the same period. On the outside of the church, which combines Romanesque and Gothic elements, is the oldest coat of arms in the city.
The city’s landmark, however, is Zagreb Cathedral. Visible from afar, its 105-metre-high, richly decorated spires stretch into the sky.
After an earthquake in the late 19th century, it was damaged and rebuilt in neo-Gothic style. The treasury houses the priceless gold of the national church.
