Sights in Coolangatta
Coolangatta was named after a schooner that sank off the coast in 1846. The anchor and a wooden piece of the ship’s hull stand as monuments in the downtown area.
The border between the states of Queensland and New South Wales runs through the Coolangatta area. It is marked by two imposing boundary stones. Directly adjacent to the town area is the neighbouring town of Tweeds Head.
A prominent feature of the town is the modern lighthouse, which carries its beacon between two stone pillars. Coolangatta is a good base for touring the hinterland, famous wine regions and along the Gold Coast.
With a hire car, multi-day tours can also be undertaken, such as to Byron Bay. A particularly nice trip is to Moreton Island, home to the free, trusting dolphins of Tangalooma.
