In the middle of the city, the damming of the river in the 1960s created Lake Burley Griffin, which has since become a popular recreation area and on whose shores stands, among other things, the National Library of Australia as well as several other important buildings and institutions.

Around Canberra, many small villages are settled with agriculture and the Queanbeyan River, Jerrabomberra Creek and Yarralumla Creek, among others, flow and there are other reservoirs, such as Lake Ginninderra and Lake Tuggeranong.
Be sure to visit the many museums in Canberra, especially the Dinosaur Museum. The oldest buildings in Canberra are St John Baptist Church, Blundell's Cottage, Mugga Mugga House etc. There are many great events throughout the year.
