Discover Skiathos by Hire Car
Skiathos is not just the name of an island in the Northern Sporades or the main town on the island, but both are associated with a unique island world that is only partly typical of Greece.
The island itself is located as part of the Sporades as a sort of link between a branch of mainland Thessaly and the islands to the east of it.
It is surrounded by the Pagaean Gold and the deep blue, Aegean Sea.
History of Skiathos
Surrounded by a rocky mountain range with wooded slopes, Skiathos town is located in a valley-like depression. From this sheltered position, there are views of the semi-circular, sweeping bay with beautiful beach and the neighbouring island of Skopelos.
At this site, the visitor walks in significant ancient footsteps. In the course of the liberation from the Persians and the Persian Wars, the city joins the Attic Sea League. Skiathos remained under Athenian sovereignty until it lost its independence. In 200 BC, the city was destroyed by the Macedonian king Philip II.

The ease of the Greek way of life is also evidenced by the local airport, which, like Heraklion in Crete, has a very short runway.
